You don’t understand how great Pixar are until you see other enlivened movies. Not that Robinson Crusoe is terrible or anything like it – it’s unquestionably superior to anything Pixar’s Cars 2 yet there’s certainly something not right here. It took me a while to make sense of it.
It’s adoration. Genuine affection is dependably at the thumping heart of a Pixar film: Woody’s adoration for Andy, Carl’s affection for his better half, Sully’s adoration for Boo, Wall-E’s adoration for Eve, Joy’s affection for Riley, The Incredibles’ adoration for each other, and Marlin’s affection for Nemo all drive the story. Possibly that is the thing that makes the Cars establishment a clammy squib what does Lightning McQueen love? Hustling? Meh.
