Casper Van Dien will dependably be Johnny Rico for me, engaging bugs for reasons unknown other than OO RAH! I’ve generally imagined that, similar to Starship Troopers the film, he was constantly misconstrued and underrated. In any case, in the years since he’s practically been consigned to sufficiently exciting B Movies, cutting out parts in the odd hit like The Pact. So consider me amazed when Mission 88 turned out not to be a space bug-chase, but rather an unobtrusive, well made and existential science fiction show. Think more along the lines of Moon and Solaris and you wouldn’t be far away the imprint.
The throwing is quite solid here. As Richards, Van Dien subverts his pigeonhole, playing a beast with a cerebrum that gradually loses any machismo when he understands he’s not in complete control.
